Create Or Restore WhatsApp Backup – Here’s how

You should create a WhatsApp backup to restore your chats in an emergency. This article will show you how it works on iPhone and Android. Do you want to create a WhatsApp backup and thus save all your chats in WhatsApp? Or have you already backed up your data and are wondering how to restore it to a new smartphone? In this article, we would like to answer all these questions step by step.

Create WhatsApp Backup

To back up your chats regularly, you can create a WhatsApp backup periodically. If you have an Android smartphone, your data will be backed up on Google Drive. On the other hand, if you’re using an iPhone, your chats are backed up in iCloud. All your chats and pictures, even videos if you want, are backed up. Your WhatsApp contacts are not backed up as they are in your address book. If you, e.g. B., would back up your iPhone, these would be saved there.

Android – WhatsApp Backup To Google Drive

If you have an Android smartphone, you can have your data automatically backed up in Google Drive. To create your WhatsApp backup using Google Drive, you should first ensure that a Google account is activated on your phone and that you have enough storage space to create a WhatsApp backup. This is first made on your phone and then uploaded to Google Drive. To activate the automatic backup of your data, we proceed as follows:

  1. Open the “WhatsApp” app on your smartphone.
  2. Now select “Chats” then “Chat Backup.”
  3. Now click on “Backup to Google Drive.”
  4. Now you can determine how often your data from WhatsApp should be backed up.
  5. Now select a Google account to back up your data. If you don’t already have a Google account, you can click Add Account and create one.
  6. Now tap on “Backup via” and select “Wi-Fi only.” Otherwise, your data will be backed up via the mobile network, unnecessarily costing data volume.

That’s it. From now on, WhatsApp regularly backs up your chats. By the way: If you click on “Save” in this window, you can start the backup manually.

iPhone – WhatsApp Backup to iCloud

If you have an iPhone, your data is backed up via iCloud. You can set the backup to start automatically regularly. Before we start the backup, you should make sure you have enough free space on your iPhone. The data is first stored on the phone and then uploaded to iCloud. And now we start…

  1. Open the “WhatsApp” app.
  2. Click on “Settings” at the bottom right.
  3. Now select “Chats” from the list.
  4. Then tap on “Chat Backup.”
  5. Click on “Auto Backup” and ideally select “Daily” so your data is backed up daily.
  6. Under “Videos included,” you can determine whether videos should also be backed up. We do not recommend backing up videos. Otherwise, your iCloud storage space can fill up quickly.

That’s it already. From now on, your WhatsApp backup will be created regularly and automatically. You can also start the backup manually with “Create backup now.”

Backup WhatsApp To PC Or Mac

It was possible to take a WhatsApp backup and transfer it to a PC or Mac. Unfortunately, this has not been possible for some time.

Restore WhatsApp Backup

Do you have a new smartphone, or was there a problem that made you want to restore the last WhatsApp backup? Then we will now show you how to load your previous WhatsApp backup.

Android – Restore WhatsApp Backup

First, ensure you’re signed in with the same Google account you used to back up your WhatsApp chats earlier. This is important. Otherwise, WhatsApp cannot find a backup. If you have a new smartphone, you can now install WhatsApp. If there is a problem and you want to restore your chats on your existing smartphone, then first delete WhatsApp and then reinstall it. Now let’s restore your WhatsApp backup:

  1. Open WhatsApp and verify your number.
  2. WhatsApp will now offer to restore your data. To do this, click on the corresponding “Restore” link so that WhatsApp can load your backup from Google Drive.
  3. If the restore was successful, click Next. It then takes a short time for WhatsApp to display all the data. Just wait a moment. Once your data has been restored, WhatsApp will reload images – and videos, provided you have backed them up.

Now all your chats should be restored to normal.

iPhone – Load WhatsApp Backup

Before we start the restore, you should be sure that you are signed in with the same Apple ID that you used to back up WhatsApp because your data is stored in the iCloud belonging to the Apple ID and can only be found if the Apple ID is the same. If you have a new iPhone, you can now install WhatsApp if you haven’t already. But maybe there were also problems, so you want to restore the Whatsapp backup on your existing iPhone. Then delete WhatsApp and reinstall it. Now let’s restore your data:

  1. Open WhatsApp and verify your number.
  2. WhatsApp will now offer to restore your data. Follow the instructions so that WhatsApp can load your backup from iCloud.
  3. If the restore was successful, click Next. It then takes a short time for WhatsApp to display all the data. Just wait a moment. Once your data has been restored, WhatsApp will reload images – and videos, provided you have backed them up.

Now all chats should be available on your iPhone as usual. Keep in mind that images take a while to be fully restored. You can now use WhatsApp as usual.

WhatsApp Backup Is Stuck – You Can Do That

If your WhatsApp backup is stuck or cannot be restored, here are a few typical problems that can occur.

  1. Use the same Google account: Do you have a new smartphone? Then make sure you use the same Google account on your Android smartphone or the same Apple ID on your iPhone. Otherwise, the backup cannot be found.
  2. Clear Storage: Doesn’t the backup go through? Then you should check if your Android or iPhone storage is almost complete. You need enough storage space as the data is first stored on the device. Only then is the WhatsApp backup uploaded to Google Drive or iCloud.
  3. Install the latest updates: Check if you have the latest Android version installed or if you should install a new iPhone update.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi: Are you not connected to your Wi-Fi network but have set the chat backup settings to only back up over Wi-Fi? Then you should either try again on your WLAN or activate the backup in the mobile network.
  5. Restart smartphone: Restart the smartphone once. This fixes possible short-term issues preventing WhatsApp from creating a backup – or restoring it. If your iPhone doesn’t restart, you can also force restart the iPhone.

We hope everything works now and you can back up or restore your data. It’s reassuring when WhatsApp automatically updates all your loved ones’ messages regularly.

Our Conclusion

Creating or restoring a WhatsApp backup is done quickly. A backup of your iPhone or Android chats is quickly stored in the cloud and can be easily fixed if necessary – e.g. B. if your smartphone is lost or you buy a new one. And that’s the most important thing. If you have any questions, please leave us a comment.
