That the telecommunications sector is constantly evolving is well known and well known. However, It is equally true that only some innovations have the numbers to make a difference. Among the latest and most interesting TLC proposals at the beginning of 2023, what aroused my curiosity was the so-called Li-Fi: an innovative technology that allows you to send and receive data through the fastest and most secure transmission medium of all: the light and, in particular, the LED one.
You find this innovative tool and what advantages, in terms of Cyber Security and Business Continuity, derive from its use. In this article, I will try to do the same, illustrating the strengths of Li-Fi connectivity and explaining why – in my opinion, but not only – it represents a real revolution in the field of TLC and connectivity for businesses.
What Is Li-Fi Technology, And How Does It Work?
Conceived as a complementary solution to Wi-Fi and data transmission via radio waves, Li-Fi technology (an acronym for “Light Fidelity”) bases its operation on the possibility, through certain devices, of modulating the light to send and receive information. To transmit data in Li-Fi mode, it is sufficient to relate two components: a transmitter and a receiver, represented by an infrared LED lamp and a special USB stick, which can be connected to any PC or tablet.
Once the data has been entered into the LED lamp, these are transformed into light signals and transmitted to the receiving devices, which re-transform them into data. This happens every time we press a button on the television remote control: the data (e.g. “Tune in to Channel 1”) is transformed into a light signal, to be received, re-transformed into data and processed by the television set.
More Safety And Precision With Light Fidelity
Since it does not emit radio frequencies, Li-Fi is perfect for use in environments where radio interference is a serious problem, such as hospitals, airplanes and military bases. Also, thanks to Li-Fi technology, it is possible to detect the position of a device and an individual with a margin of error of just a few centimeters. This is an insignificant advantage, especially if you want to offer personalized services to those who find themselves within a certain environment or perimeter, such as customers in a supermarket, patients in a clinic or visitors to a museum.
From a security point of view, Li-Fi covers only the areas reached by light (the interior of a room, a classroom, etc.) means that the possibility of intrusions or cyber attacks from outside is zero. Finally, if you want to use light as a means of transmission in open environments – perhaps to connect two remote offices in point-to-point mode – Li-Fi allows you to cover a considerable distance of 300 meters.
Li-Fi Technology: The “Bright” Future Of Connectivity
Given the growing need for security and corporate intranets’ stability, Li-Fi represents an unprecedented solution: safe, stable and easy to use, just like turning the light on and off. Therefore, please keep your eyes peeled because this is one of those innovations with the numbers to make a difference, which I’m sure we will hear a lot about in the coming years.
